BC Grizzly Bear Hunting Under Attack!!

On the wake of the recent loss in Ontario, the anti-hunting community has launched a full-scale attack on grizzly hunting in British Columbia.  As you know, grizzly bears are not threatened nor endangered in British Columbia, in fact populations are thriving up there as they are in Alaska, Yukon and NWT.

While a grizzly bear hunt is out of reach for the vast majority of sportsmen, an unchecked population will lead to population loss in moose, caribou, elk, sheep, deer and other game species.  The real problem is that the anti-hunting community is singling out those hunting opportunities with the least participation and targeting them for removal.  They will then move on to bigger targets, eventually deer hunting, unless they are stopped now.

What you can do -

Write the Minister of Environment in British Columbia.

Here are some facts for your letter:

  1. Grizzly bear are not threatened nor endangered in BC
  2. Grizzly bear numbers are on the increase in BC
  3. Grizzly attacks on humans are up, the following statistics prove this out, 31 in 1992, 42 in 1993, 57 in 1994, and 89 in 1995 (there are no figures available for '96 - present).
  4. The average grizzly bear hunt brings $12,000 US Dollars to the BC economy - per hunt.
  5. Canadian Provinces who open the doors to anti-hunting agendas have seen tourist dollars spent by sportsmen drop dramatically.  Sportsmen are sensitive to this issue.
  6. Financial contributions for the bears, by anti-hunting organizations seeking to eliminate these seasons, have been zero.  If this ban is passed, there will be no economic incentive to protect grizzly bears.
  7. Sportsmen are the true stewards of wildlife.  By our actions and our funding we have done more to protect the grizzly bear and its habitat than all of the environmental and anti-hunting groups combined.
  8. This attack is not about helping grizzly bears.  It is about stopping the hunt.  If the animal welfare people were concerned about grizzly bears they would purchase habitat for them, fund research projects, and use their funds to combat the real threat to grizzlies which is development and land uses.  Hunting is not harmful to bear populations and they know that.
