At the tail end of last season I bought a hunter's ground seat by H.S. Strutt at a local feed-and-seed. This year I had a chance to try it out, and it's really better than I expected.
It's a small low seat, with the front legs about 4" longer than the rear ones. If you sit at the base of a tree or a stump there's always the fact that the ground isn't level to contend with. For the past 20 seasons I've used an old milk crate, propping up the front with sticks to make it approximately level, but this isn't entirely satisfactory. It's heavy and noisy to carry, and sometimes leveling it isn't possible; nor is it terribly comfortable.
The new seat is much lighter and easier to carry. It's made of aluminum and webbing and weighs only a few ounces, light enough so I can just clip it to my daypack and not even know it's there until I find a spot to sit. It's much more comfortable than my old crate, but best of all, it will sit approximately level almost anywhere I have tried. The rear legs go up against the stump and dig into the ground, the front legs are just enough longer to settle the seat about 6-8" off the floor. It's a comfortable position from which to shoot and I found out this past week that I can sit on it for several hours at a time without getting sore-butt syndrome. All in all, a bargain for the $22 it cost. I notice that Bass Pro Shops has a similar seat for $50, but it's padded and a bit fancier than mine.
For people who hunt on the ground, and I would think especially for turkey hunters who need to be mobile, this is perfect. One of the best widgets I have bought in recent years.
