LONDON (Reuters) - A policeman guarding the London residence of Prince Charles accidentally fired his pistol inside the royal palace, police said on Saturday.

But they played down press reports that the bullet from the Glock automatic narrowly missed a soldier walking in the grounds of St James's Palace after it ricocheted off the floor and went through a window.

A police spokesman said: ``A police officer accidentally discharged his firearm within a secure unloading area. It is a designated area used for this purpose.

``The officer was not hurt and at no time was there any danger to a member of the royal family or to the public.''
