WLFA Supported Bill Cleans Up PR-DJ Funds- (04/21) National

The U. S. House of Representatives has passed a bill amending the way funds derived from taxes on outdoor gear are allocated for conservation projects and increasing sportsmen's opportunities.

The bill reinforces the importance of hunting, fishing and trapping on lands acquired or administered with federal aid in fish and wildlife restoration funds. The committee report accompanying the bill specifically mentions field trialing as a permissible activity on lands acquired with these funds. This specific inclusion will be a tremendous help where field trialing is threatened in the future.

House Resolution 3671, sponsored by Rep. Don Young (R-AK), increases funds available to state wildlife agencies by eliminating opportunities for waste, fraud and abuse in the administration of Pittman-Robertson (PR) and Dingle-Johnson (DJ) funds. Monies for both PR and DJ funds come from taxes on the sale of hunting, fishing and trapping gear.

"Abuses in how these dollars were being used have been brought to the forefront by WLFA and other groups in the outdoor community," said Bill Horn, WLFA director of national and international affairs. "Through our efforts, sportsmen let their representatives know they would not stand for the misuse of these very important conservation dollars. To the legislators credit, in particular Chairman Young, they came through in a big way."

It now moves to the senate where a vote is expected by July.
